Today we are most familiar with the Peter Pan of Barrie’s play (and later novel Peter Pan and Wendy) that inspired the films, but the character first appeared in his adult episodic novel The Little White Bird. His thick, deliberate lines together with gentle colour, incrementally washed in, remains beguiling and ever so slightly sinister. Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens we’re looking at today. The star of the period is undoubtedly Arthur Rackham and it’s his version of J.M. We’re still fascinated by the Golden Age of illustration that brief period before the first world war when the technology, the talent, the economics and an audience aligned just long enough to allow the publication of sumptuously illustrated editions of popular works.
